EZ Bin Cleaning for Trash, Recycling, and Green Bin Cleaning
As compost and green bins have not always been required in Southern California, you may not be sure what you are supposed to put in these bins. It is helpful to learn what can and cannot be composted and included in “green” waste so that your trash company can dispose of it safely.
What Can You Put In Your Compost Bin?
The list below provides insight into what can safely go into your compost bin for bin pickup by your local garbage company. Keep in mind, you will put a wider variety of items in your commercial compost bin than you can traditionally compost at home.
Unless otherwise specified, you can put the following into your compost bin:
- Fruit and vegetables (whole or scraps)
- Unfinished dairy products
- Eggshells
- Coffee grounds or compostable filters
- Meat, bones, fish, or seafood shells
- Yard waste: flowers, trimmings, grass clippings
- Clean, untreated, and uncoated bamboo or chopsticks
- Natural corks
What sets commercial compost pickup apart from at-home composting?
Commercial compost and green waste facilities can reach higher levels of heat than you can at home, so they can break down meats, dairy, and bones. This would be too much to be able to break down in most at-home composting bins or piles.
What Cannot Go Into My Green Waste or Compost Bin?
Many waste items cannot be broken down during the composting process. The items must stay out of the compost or green bin so that they do not interrupt the breakdown of the green waste.
The following items must not be thrown away in your compost bin:
- Glass
- Plastic
- Styrofoam
- Produce Stickers
- Rubber bands
- Pet waste
- Kitty litter
- Plastic or wax coatings
- Twist-ties
- Fat and oil cooking byproducts
- Products labeled as “biodegradable” or “compostable”
- Cooked, processed foods
- Anything with visible black, green, or blue mold
